Notwithstanding any other provision of law to the contrary, children who serve as pages for the general assembly during the school year, either at regular or special sessions, may be granted excused absences for the day or days missed from school while serving as pages. Such approval or disapproval shall be at the discretion of the principal of the school in which they are enrolled. If such absences are approved, such children shall be credited as present.
