Memphis Traffic Cameras Temporarily Out of Service Beginning August 4

Traffic cameras in Memphis will be out of service beginning August 4 while the department proceeds with the project to add another 90 cameras to the Memphis area. The existing cameras will be out of service for as much as eight weeks as crews work to link fiber optic cables at the newly constructed Memphis Traffic Management Center. Once the installation is complete, Memphis motorists will be able to view 115 traffic cameras located throughout the city.

The $31.5 million Memphis Intelligent Transportation System project includes a new Traffic Management Center, 39 additional overhead message boards, 90 additional traffic cameras, and 16 highway advisory radio transmitters. When complete the system will have a total of 115 traffic cameras, 42 overhead message boards and a city-wide highway advisory radio system. Work on the system is expected to be complete by October 2008.

Motorists may still call 511 for updated travel information.
