Private Nonprofit Organizations may be Eligible for Disaster Assistance

NASHVILLE, Tenn. – The Tennessee Emergency Management Agency is encouraging eligible private nonprofit (PNP) organizations in Fayette, Shelby, and Tipton counties to apply for disaster assistance as a result of the severe weather and straight-line winds impacting the area on June 25-26, 2023.

“A severe weather event can be financially draining to private nonprofit organizations,” said TEMA Assistant Director for Recovery and Mitigation Judy Huff. “FEMA’s public assistance program is a valuable resource to help communities get back on their feet and recover after a disaster.”

Certain private nonprofit (PNP) organizations are eligible to apply for funding through Federal Emergency Management Agency’s (FEMA’s) Public Assistance (PA) Program under emergency and major disaster declarations. Eligible public assistance work can include:

• Emergency Work
  • Debris removal from the facility property.
  • Emergency protective measures to prevent damage to facility and its contents.
• Permanent Work
  • Funding to restore facilities based on pre-disaster design and function.

Examples of eligible PNP organizations may include houses of worship, volunteer organizations, recreational clubs, faith-based organizations, and more.

To begin the public assistance application process or for questions about PNP public assistance eligibility, please email TEMA.PA@tn.gov. Interested organizations should contact TEMA no later than September 14, 2023 to begin the public assistance process.
