Flash Report #6 Tornadoes and Severe Weather

HIGHLIGHTS 
• The State Emergency Operations Center in Nashville is activated at a Level 4- Elevated to support local requests. 
• Cheatham, Gibson and Stewart counties have been approved for FEMA Individual Assistance, in addition to Davidson, Dickson, Montgomery and Sumner counties who were previously named in the Expedited Major Disaster Declaration. 
• Disaster Recovery Centers and Business Recovery Centers have been opened to assist survivors. 
• Requests for assistance continue to be fulfilled as needed. 
• Emergency Service Coordinators (ESCs) from TDOT, TDCI, TDH, THP, TN Department of Human Services, and more are monitoring the situation and standing by to provide assistance to local jurisdictions.   

CURRENT SITUATION 
Following the tornadoes and severe weather that impacted Cheatham, Davidson, Dickson, Gibson, Montgomery, Robertson, Stewart, Sumner, Trousdale, Weakley, and Wilson counties on Saturday, Dec. 9, TEMA has continued to coordinate with state and local partners to meet survivors’ most immediate needs. 

Cheatham, Gibson and Stewart counties have been named in the amendment of the Major Disaster Declaration to receive FEMA’s Individual Assistance. These counties are in addition to Davidson, Dickson, Montgomery and Sumner counties that were named in the approval of the Expedited Major Disaster Declaration on December 13. The deadline to apply for FEMA Individual Assistance is February 12. Additionally, Public Assistance for Cheatham, Davidson, Dickson, Gibson, Montgomery, Robertson, Stewart, Sumner, and Weakley counties has been requested. 

The National Weather Service confirmed eight tornadoes: an EF1 in Clay County, an EF3 in Montgomery County, an EF1 in Gibson/Weakley counties, an EF2 in Robertson County (Springfield), an EF2 in Dickson/Cheatham counties (White Bluff), an EF2 in Dickson County (Cumberland Furnace), an EF1 in Stewart/Montgomery counties, and an EF2 in Davidson/Sumner counties.

• Disaster Recovery Centers provide survivors with information from Tennessee state agencies, FEMA and the Small Business Administration. Survivors can get help applying for federal assistance, learn about the types of assistance available, learn about the appeals process, and get updates on applications.

BUSINESS RECOVERY CENTER LOCATIONS
• Business Recovery Centers provide businesses assistance who were impacted by the tornadoes and severe weather through the Small Business Administration (SBA). SBA provides low-interest disaster loans.

SHELTERS 
• Shelters, both American Red Cross managed and Independently Operated, have been closed. 

TDH 
• The Tennessee Department of Health has confirmed seven weather-related fatalities, four in Montgomery County and three in Davidson County.  

PROTECTIVE ACTIONS/KEY MESSAGES 
• Do not enter damaged buildings or hazardous locations.  • Hire only licensed contractors and do not pay the total amount before the work is complete. More tips for consumers after a disaster can be found here.

Nashville: Cloudy. High temperatures near 50F, falling to the lower 40s by evening. Southwesterly winds 15-25mph, gusting to 40mph, shifting northeasterly overnight. Rain continuing through evening, then a chance of snow showers after midnight. Rainfall totals expected to be less than 0.10” and little to no snow accumulation. Low temperatures in the lower 30s.
Knoxville: Cloudy. High temperatures in the upper 50s. Southwesterly winds 15-25mph, gusting to 40mph. Rain continuing through evening, then a chance of snow showers overnight with little to no snow accumulation. Low temperatures in the lower 30s.
Chattanooga: Cloudy. High temperatures near 50F, falling to the lower 40s by evening. Southwesterly winds 15-25mph, gusting to 40mph. Rain continuing through evening, then a chance of snow showers overnight. Rainfall totals expected to be less than 0.10” and little to no snow accumulation. Low temperatures in the lower 30s.
