Preserving Tennessee’s Cultural Heritage: A Statewide Conservation Survey (An IMLS “Connecting to Collections” funded project)

This survey is being conducted by the Tennessee State Library and Archives and Tennessee State Museum in conjunction with their partners the Tennessee Association of Museums and Society of Tennessee Archivists.  The survey is the first phase of an Institute of Museum and Library Services Connecting to Collections:  Statewide Planning Grant.  In the future, we will also be offering a series of preservation workshops throughout the state.  As part of this grant project, museums, archives, and libraries may also request staff from the Tennessee State Library and Archives and Tennessee State Museum to visit their site and offer preservation assessments and advice.  Workshops and on-site consultations will be offered at no cost to participating institutions.

The survey focuses on the kinds of preservation challenges faced by most institutions.  Assessing our current situation is a first step towards seeking enhanced funding and training opportunities that will assist Tennessee libraries, archives, and museums in meeting the preservation needs of their collections.

Our survey of cultural collections will identify urgent conservation needs, assess environmental conditions.  It will help guide the IMLS with funding for Tennessee to help educate and preserve the diverse cultural heritage collections.

If your site is a Tennessee agency and you maintain any kind of cultural heritage collections; please feel free to participate if you have not already completed a paper copy.
