Plan for Tennessee Local Libraries within the Regional System
A three-year cycle of inservices offered in each region incorporates thirteen categories of continuing education.
They are as follows:
UNIT 1 – BASIC SKILLS CATEGORIES
- Introduction to librarianship
- Library governance
- Working with the Regional Library
- Overview of library processes
UNIT 2 – ADVANCED SKILLS CATEGORIES
- Policy development
- Planning and evaluating library services
- Planning and management of physical facilities
- Public services
- Technical services
- Children’s services
- Young adult services
- Adult services
- Marketing
First year of cycle : Choose one category from Unit 1 and three categories from Unit 2. From each of the four chosen categories, design and schedule an inservice for local librarians. Use the specific list of needs identified within the Continuing Education document/outline developed by the Continuing Education Committee.
Make certain that technology plays a vital role in at least two of the inservices. Invite at least two speakers from outside your own regional library.
Second year of cycle : Choose another four categories using the same guidelines as in Year 1.
Third year of cycle : Choose the remaining five categories from the list. Use the same guidelines as before.
Repeat cycle, targeting needs not covered previously if possible.
