Officer Tony Cross Named Area 32 Wildlife Officer Of The Year
Area 32 is proud to announce that Tony Cross has been selected as “Wildlife Officer of the Year”. Tony’s efforts as wildlife officer in Dekalb County are exceptional and his enthusiasm in his work demonstrates an unusual dedication to professionalism in wildlife law enforcement.
Officer Cross’s efforts in public relations are excellent as well. He keeps the public well informed about TWRA activities. In addition to hundreds of phone calls and personal contacts, Tony hosts a weekly radio show in Dekalb County. His public programs include: a wildlife trailer display at the Family Resource Fair, manning a fair booth in neighboring Warren Co., participating in marina operators workshops on Center Hill Lake, teaching boating safety to Indian Creek Camp counselors, programs at Smithville Elementary School, helping facilitate a NWTF Wheelin Sportsman Deer Hunt, boating safety courses and exam monitoring in Dekalb Co., teaching three hunter safety classes, tagging pelts at the TN Free Trapper Association Fur Auction, and organizing the 4th Annual Pea Ridge WMA Kids Fishing Rodeo.
Tony has also assisted landowners with wildlife damage problems. This past year he attended training to implement a new program called "archery in the schools". He set up one of the few pilot programs in the state and that team went on to place third in the state competition and eventually participated in the nationals.
Officer Cross’s achievements also include checking a combined total of 894 hunters, fishermen, and boaters. He issued 39 court citations, 73 warning citations, and assisted in 45 other cases for a total of 157 citations. Included in these totals are 32 big game cases, 44 fishing cases, and 81 boating cases. Tony also worked two boating accidents this past year.
