What is Walk & Bike to School Day?

Walk & Bike to School Day brings special attention to obstacles making it difficult for students to safely walk and bike to school as well as to highlight the benefits of students getting physical and social activity walking and biking to school.  Walk & Bike to School Day is a community effort of school officials, teachers, students, parents and other local government officials like police, parks and recreation, planning and public works. An international success, Walk to School Day happens at the beginning of October and Bike to School Day of in early May. Many Tennessee school systems particpate in Walk & Bike to Schoool.  The Walk & Bike to School website has tools to help plan your special event.

What is Safe Routes to School?

Safe Routes to School (SRTS) is a federally funded program focusing on the benefits of children walking and biking to school.  It aims to improve safety for children and the community and provide opportunities to increase physical activity.  A model program integrates health, fitness, traffic relief, environmental awareness, and safety.  Safe Routes to School can be a great way to raise awareness about pedestrian safety around your school and community.  Celebrate Walk and Bike to School Day.  Your school may be able to apply for funding to participate through the Tennessee Department of Transportation’s (TDOT) Safe Routes to School Program
