David Gerregano was reappointed as commissioner of the Tennessee Department of Revenue by Governor Bill Lee in January 2019. A native of Gainesboro, Commissioner Gerregano was initially appointed to the position by Governor Bill Haslam in December 2016.  Since starting work at the department as a staff attorney in 1997, he has held multiple legal and administrative positions such as hearing officer, general counsel, assistant commissioner, and deputy commissioner.

As Commissioner of Revenue, Mr. Gerregano oversees the collection and distribution of more than $20 billion in state revenue and $4 billion in local revenue associated with tax and motor vehicle title and registration laws. This revenue is used to fund a broad range of public services including schools, roads, bridges, public health, and public safety.

During his time as commissioner, the department has replaced its aging tax and motor vehicle systems with state-of-the art technology and improved services to Tennesseans. Mr. Gerregano has also been a leader in the modernization of state tax laws, including his work on the Revenue Modernization Act of 2015 and the 2019 enactment of Wayfair legislation to create a level playing field for local and out-of-state sellers.  In 2023, he helped craft the Tennessee Works Tax Act, which lays a firm foundation for the state’s continued economic growth. Throughout his tenure, Mr. Gerregano has also focused on making tax guidance readily available through multiple online resources and public outreach.

Commissioner Gerregano previously served as president of the Southeastern Association of Tax Administrators and served on the Federation of Tax Administrators Board of Trustees. Mr. Gerregano received his bachelor’s degree in economics and political science from Vanderbilt University in 1992 and his J.D. from Vanderbilt University Law School in 1995. He clerked for the Chancery Court of Rutherford County before joining the Department of Revenue. Commissioner Gerregano lives in Nashville with his wife, Sohnia, and his two children, Olivia and Daniel.
