Throughout TDOT’s project development and construction phases, historians and archaeologists in the Cultural Resources Section ensure compliance with the National Historic Preservation Act of 1966 through their review of TDOT projects to identify and assess effects to archaeological sites and historic buildings, structures, districts, or other places that are listed or eligible for listing in the National Register of Historic Places and to consult with federally recognized Native American Tribes with an interest in Tennessee. TDOT Cultural Resources staff provides documentation of these studies to the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA), the Advisory Council on Historic Preservation (ACHP), the State Historic Preservation Office (SHPO), Section 106 consulting parties, local governments, and the public at-large.
