Policies

The following policies have been adopted by the Tennessee Athletic Commission in addition to their laws and rules:

Hybrid Rule:

The Tennessee Athletic Commission recognizes the American Boxing Commission’s “Hybrid Rule” that defines the back of the head for Mixed Martial Arts. Strikes behind the crown of the head above the ears are not permissible within the Mohawk area. Strikes below the top of the ear are not permissible within the nape of the neck area.

Blood Tests:

A professional combatant shall be subject to additional blood testing for infectious diseases if more than ninety (90) days have elapsed since the combatant's license was issued. All expenses incurred pursuant to this section shall be paid by the promoter.

Medical Records Prior to Events:

It is the policy of the Tennessee Athletic Commission for all medical paperwork required for a combatant to be turned in to the commission at least seven (7) days prior to a combat event.

Use of Petroleum Jelly:

It is the policy of the Tennessee Athletic Commission that petroleum jelly may be applied to the facial area of a Mixed Martial Art Combatant at cage side or ringside only in the presence of an inspector, referee or person designated by the Commission immediately before the combatant enters the cage or ring. There can be no petroleum jelly in the dressing room or in the corner of a Mixed Martial Art Combatant. If petroleum jelly is applied between rounds, it must be applied by the Commission’s designee.
