In March and April, DHS launched two programs, which are still underway, for citizens impacted by the COVID-19 Pandemic: Emergency Cash Assistance and the Essential Employee Child Care Assistance Program. We’d like to continue sharing this information with customers who may need this assistance and qualify. The Department will continue to publicly promote both programs as well.

The Emergency Cash Assistance program provides two monthly cash payments to families that were employed as of March 11, 2020 and have lost a job or lost at least 50% of their earned income due to the COVID-19 emergency.  This money is funded by the Temporary Assistance for Needy Families program and provides: $500 for a household of 1 to 2 persons; $750 for a household of 3 to 4 persons; $1000 for a household with 5 or more persons.

The Essential Employee Child Care Assistance Program is designed to help support essential workers so they can stay on the job during the COVID-19 emergency.  Through payment assistance and a network of temporary care locations, parents who work as essential employees can access child care at no cost, during the COVID-19 pandemic. The Essential Employee Child Care Payment Assistance Program makes payments directly to the child care provider.  Families can access this benefit at child care programs who are licensed by the Department of Human Services or regulated by the Department of Education and are participating in the Child Care Certificate Program.
