Address Change

You are required to notify the Department of Safety and Homeland Security of any address change within 10 days of that change. This includes when you physically relocate, or your address is changed by the United States Postal Service or your local 9-1-1 Emergency Communications District.

Notifying the post office will not provide the information to the Department of Safety and Homeland Security. By failing to notify us, you could miss important information about your license renewal. The law does not require your new address to be changed on your physical license, just on our files. There is no fee to change your address in our system.

Your license must show your legal physical residence. A post office box will not be accepted as a residential address.

How to Notify Us of Your Change of Address

Online through e-Services:

  • The easiest way to update your record is online through e-Services.
  • In e-Services click on Change Your Address under Driver Services and follow the prompts.
  • If you would like a license that reflects your new address, return to the main menu in e-Services and select Renew a License, Permit, or ID -or- Duplicate a License, Permit, or ID if you are not within your renewal period. Once the transaction is complete and any associated fee is paid, a new license will be mailed to your new address.

At a Self-Service Kiosk:

  • Once you are at a Self-Service Kiosk, follow the on-screen prompts to update your address.
  • If you would like a license that reflects changes made, begin a new transaction, and renew your license or order a duplicate license if you are not within your renewal period. Once the transaction is complete and any associated fee is paid, a new license will be mailed to your new address.

By Mail:

To update your record with your new address by mail, you will need to provide the following information in writing:

  • Full name
  • Date of birth
  • Driver License Number
  • Social Security Number
  • Old address that appears on current driver license
  • New address
  • County of your new address

You can also pick up a Change-of-Address Form at any Driver Services Center.

Mail your Change-of-Address Form or letter that includes all the above information to:

TN DEPARTMENT OF SAFETY AND HOMELAND SECURITY
ATTN: DRIVER LICENSE RECORDS
PO BOX 945

After we receive your information, your driving record will be updated within approximately 15 business days.

At a Driver Services Center:

  • You can also update your address at a Driver Services Center.
  • If you want a new license issued that reflects your new address, and after paying the appropriate fees at the Driver Services Center, a new license will be issued.
  • If your address change also involves a name change, you will need to update your license at a Driver Services Center.
