Project Description

The main proposed improvements include widening to a six (6) lane urban typical section consisting of three (3) twelve (12) foot travel lanes in each direction, twelve (12) foot paved outside shoulders, fourteen (14) foot paved inside shoulders within approximately 300-feet of ROW with a concrete median barrier wall. Other desigin aspects included in the project are:

• Full replacement of eight (8) bridges with four (4) new bridges.

o   Long Hollow Pike – 3-Span Concrete Box Beam

o   East Cedar Street – Single Span Concrete Box Beam

o   Mansker Creek – 4-Span Concrete Box Beam

o   US-31W – 3-Span Steel Plate Girder

• Conversion of the interchange at US 31W to a Diverging Diamond Interchange including new traffic signals.
  
• Auxiliary lanes connecting the Long Hollow Pike and US 31W interchanges.
• Lighting throughout the project.
• Eight (8) retaining wall structures.

Major Issues & Challenges

• Tight construction phasing for bridges
• Significant grade changes on I-65 to raise the clearance for the bridge over US-31W
• Traffic control
