Interstate 40

Wilson County

The Tennessee Department of Transportation (TDOT) plans to widen Interstate 40 in Wilson County, from Interstate 840 to State Route 26 (US 70). The project, which will widen I-40 from the current 4-lane section to six lanes across a 4.72-mile footprint, is intended to address current and anticipated future congestion along the I-40 corridor. To reduce the time, cost to complete, and impact of the project, all construction is planned to occur to the inside of existing lanes (i.e., toward the median) and to not involve any right-of-way impacts.

Current Status: This project will begin preliminary engineering in 2026.

Estimated construction start: This project is scheduled in TDOT’s 10-Year Project Plan to begin construction in Fiscal Year 2028.

Estimated completion*: TBD

Funding Type: TDOT anticipates that a portion of this project will be funded through the Transportation Modernization Fund.

Public Involvement and Engagement

Because this project involves no right-of-way impacts, TDOT anticipates that a design public meeting will not be held for this project.
