State Route 48

The Tennessee Department of Transportation (TDOT) is proposing to construct improvements on State Route 48 in Montgomery County. The proposed project includes the widening of SR 48 from two lanes to five lanes with a two-way left turn lane from just south of SR 374 (101st Airborne Division Parkway) to north of Tylertown Road. The project also includes an innovative intersection called a Continuous-Flow Intersection at the intersection of SR 48 and SR 374 to help with traffic flow and safety.
The proposed project includes approximately 4.24 miles of roadway construction work.
This project is identified for funding in TDOT's 10-Year Project Plan, with construction scheduled for Fiscal Year 2029.

Funding Source: TDOT anticipates that a portion of this project will be funded through the Transportation Modernization Fund.
History and Background
State Route 48 will be widened from two to five lanes, including a center turn lane, 4-foot shoulders, curb and gutter, and 5-foot sidewalks. Additionally, there will be intersection improvements at Needmore Road, Hazelwood Road, Meriwether Road, SR 236 (Tiny Town Road), I-24, and Tylertown Road. The intersection of Proposed Spring Creek Parkway will be included in the improvements of SR 48. Additionally, a new bridge will be constructed over Spring Creek, and the existing bridge over I-24 will be widened.
As part of the project, TDOT will construct a Continuous-Flow Interchange (CFI) at the intersection of SR 48 and SR 374. A CFI provides the benefit of moving left-turning vehicles across traffic to the left (opposite) side of the roadway ahead of the primary intersection through a separate signalized intersection, which provides for free-flow left turns at the primary intersection.
The primary intersection is, in turn, much more efficient because left-turn green times are no longer needed and the through movements can function freely (green or red). Free-flow left turns at the primary intersection reduce the number of conflict points of turning left across traffic, reducing the potential for serious collisions).
